Combine this with themes of sci-fi, romance, and the dual feeling of being alone yet connected. The musicality is challenging, combining high romantic era classical music, with 80s and 70s arena rock. Could you say wtf wow I'm still totally in love with this band of talented musicians?

At first listen, a blush, a tingle, the anticipation quite literally gave my arms goosebumps. Even before opening the first song, I knew it would be grand. It was as if a long lost friend has tapped me on the shoulder, and I turn to see a fond face. For a die hard Muse fan, this album was just like that, except you see the progress from when you last saw them. And although I'm also a fan of classic Muse, the new direction as seen on Black Holes and Revelations shows their reach for combining their strengths into something out of their zone.

Uprising opens the album beautifully, with space 80s synth sounds, and Bellamy's vocals "They will not control us / And we will be victorious" calling back to lyrics as heard on Knights of Cydonia. Resistance begins with a haunting instrumental (of which before the piano hits reminded me of the end of Citizen Erased). I could easily see the chorus "Love is our resistance / They keep us apart and they won't stop breaking us down / And hold me, our lips must always be sealed" being huge. I just love how Muse incorporates this timeless love theme in a few of their songs. So damn catchy. Easily one of my favorite songs on this album. I also love Dom's thundering drums and Chris's always fantastic bass in this song. "It could be wrong, could be wrong..."

Undisclosed Desires stems from the love theme again except this is more raw. Matt's vocals again never fail to inspire me, the dance beat to this song makes you want to get down and dirty. "I want to reconcile the violence in your heart / I want to satisfy the undisclosed desires in your heart / Please me / Show me how it's done." United States of Eurasia (+Collateral Damage) recalls Queen too easily. Too easy a comparison... but aside from that, Matt's piano musicianship is showcased amazingly here, the latter half of the song sampling one of Chopin's beautiful nocturnes. Matt's classical training is shown very gorgeously. It would be difficult to find a person whose very heart and soul does not resonate with Chopin's piano works.

Guiding Light is a very 80s arena rock ballad influenced number, with a stomping bass and drums and the obligatory short guitar solo. Very anthemic. Unnatural Selection is yet another epic song, this time about truth, justice, religion, hope, etc. A powerful song about powerful themes that will have you shouting "I want the truth!" to the very end.

MK Ultra, deriving its title from the CIA Project MK ULTRA, immediately latches onto a very catchy guitar riff and fast paced lyrics. "How much deception can you take? / How many lies will you create?" I Belong to You (+Mon cœur s'ouvre à ta voix), which also samples a little of Saint Saen's Samson and Delilah, is a romantic song of yearning, recalling ballads such as Falling Away With You and Endlessly. You can hear his desperation with "Réponds à ma tendresse!" and then the ending lines, "I can't find the words to say, they're overdue / I traveled half the world to say / "I belong to you'"

The three part Exogenesis: Symphony tracks recalls a time of progressive rock in the late 60s and early 70s, that of Moody Blues incorporating full usage of the London Symphony Orchestra, notably the strings. Instead of using the universal theme of love - as the Moody Blues does so effortlessly, Muse uses larger out of the world themes. With Exogenesis: Symphony Pt 1: Overture you could hardly make out Matt's falsetto until "I can’t forgive you, and I can’t forget." The overture segues nicely into Exogenesis: Symphony Pt 2: Cross-Pollination, opening with a very beautiful piano solo (did I mention Matt is a very talented musician? Hot). All three parts close the album wonderfully, with the last part, Exogenesis: Symphony Pt 3: Redemption, capable of bringing tears to anyone's eyes.

His new album, although half of it is instrumental, is still good. I particulary liked Oh No and Effigy, both having clever lyrics and possibly forced rhymes for those academic terms he particularly enjoys using (but hey, works in his favor!) that kind of forces you to use a dictionary if you are not that well versed in English (meh can't blame my childhood, but I'd rather use a dictionary than be monolingual). His lyrics have a great deal of maturity, depth, and uses of those things you learn in high school English, like similes, alliteration, metaphors, personification, imagery, etc. It's incredibly smart, witty, and forces you to dwell on them long after the song ends. I absolutely love that.

However, my favorite Andrew Bird song will always be Armchairs, where he talks of a past relationship. An empty armchair that reminds him of the girl is the setting of this mysterious song, one that actually twists and turns into a climax and then a denouement, which throughout the entire song you don't really hear the typical verse-chorus-verse-chorus type structure like most songs use. The weaving strings, ambling piano, and slow and steady drums. He reads prose in the start, pipes advice in the middle, then after crawling out of his shell, reveals that he himself has raised a solemn white flag for the battle of love and of time.

The setting is really his dream where him and the woman are sitting in armchairs. Although they are physically close, there is still that distance between them, both in a literal and emotional sense. Time is written all over this song, "empty rooms were full of incandescent hands", "time is a crooked bow", "55 3/8", "looms" (the Greek stuff), etc. When he croons into "Time is a crooked bow" is just means that time flies by so fast, it's over before you know it, where did it all go? Take it as you mean it, I'm merely guessing. But it makes sense since throughout the rest of the song he's mentioning that he wishes he/she could traverse time/the distance between them despite how quickly it rushed by.

I adore the line "Grab hold of your bootstraps, and pull like hell until gravity feels sorry for you and lets you go / As if you lack the proper chemicals to know the way it felt the last time you let yourself fall this low" because it's just so fucking clever.

The last two stanzas are him telling how he'll always be in that armchair waiting for her, despite it being exactly 55 3/8 years later, he's still hoping they can reconcile slowly "with epoxy and a pair of pliers", and how if they do reconcile that they'll "get back at" time by rebuiling. However, he reveals (stunningly) in the last stanza that he still feels sad that she never bothered to keep in touch with him at all through all this time "You didn't write, you didn't call, it didn't cross your mind at all" and how he has somehow never regained from that, still counting time in perfect precision since the day they parted, "Fifty-five and three-eighths, fifty-five and three-eighths..." In a way he admits defeat and sinks back into his armchair, into gravity, back into the passage of time that flies by without her...

Ah! I just love this song haha. So much pain, loss, and passion. Just going to list a run through of what I feel about each song, jotting down some thoughts. Overall, I feel that nothing to match the genius-ness of their self-titled debut (they set the bar really high on that one), but if I had to rank them it would be their first, second, then this album as last.

This doesn't mean that it's a bad album, it's still very solid (unlike oh, Keane Perfect Symmetry, Coldplay Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends, and then there's the indifferent Kaiser Chiefs Off With Their Heads and a really different sound coming from The Killers Day & Age.). All of these artists have unbeatable debuts, but with the exception of Coldplay and The Killers, their second albums began a slippery slope.

I think 2008 despite the number of albums that came out from existing artists were all very blah, which made it a great year for those emerging artists as well. The only albums I can come up with that were exceptionally great were Calexico Carried To Dust and Hot Chip Made In The Dark. Others that probably should have not received the hype are Oasis Dig Out Your Soul, Weezer Weezer (Red Album)... hmmm, there are more but they only have like 1-2 notable songs tops in their newest. Stay in the 90s, let people remember you for your great songs, you know, like Neil Young says, "It's better to burn out, than to fade away." Kind of like how the Beatles are remembered far better for their 10 year run rather than the Stones 150 year run, which anyway, the Stones best songs were in their early days.

ANYWAY, way off topic, let's just return to Franz Ferdinand. Can I say, turn up that bass groove? Up that distorted synth? It's all a very different sound to this indie rock roots band that emerged with very perfect songs like Take Me Out, The Dark of the Matinee, Michael, This Fire, etc. It seems like they replaced their fantastic guitar riffs with subpar synth runs, something they're not known for unlike the Killers or Kaiser Chiefs. Sadly, this album was a little disappointing, kind of like hearing your favorite band switch gears due to a formula that they started being copied so heavily by other bands that others are starting to feel that they are old. It's kind of sad actually. Few tracks stand out, and the ones that do aren't as good as the average track from their debut.

1. Ulysses: Very nice dance beat, catchy as hell, massive sounds coming around from everywhere. Sexy as fuck. "La, la la la la, ULYSSES!"

2. Turn It On: Good second song, danceable too. "You turn it on..."

3. No You Girls: Another dance-y song, the hand claps, the Outsiders like bouncy guitars... at this point you see the formula they're using and so far I didn't like it.

4. Twilight Omens: Finally a song that is as fucking catchy as Ulysses. With clever clever lyrics that are reminiscent of their debut album. "I wrote your name upon the back of my hand / Slept upon it, then I woke up with it backwards on my face / Reading forwards from my mirror to my heart" and "I typed your number into my calculator / Where it spelled a dirty word when I turned it upside down / You can turn my dirty world the right way around"

5. Send Him Away: It's different than the usual Franz Ferdinand, switching tempos like Well That Was Easy but worse.

6. Live Alone: Another catchy chorus that demands singing it out loud if you happen to be lucky enough to see them live these days. Sigh. I will one day!!

7. Bite Hard: Slow beginning growing into something infectious - or so you hope.

8. What She Came For: The chorus fails to deliver, wish it did. You can see that after Bite Hard and this track that the jamming out ends set you up for Lucid Dreams.

9. Can't Stop Feeling: Kind of overdone synth, kind of like that "I like to move it move it" song that makes you want to punch yourself in the stomach. Except not that bad.

10. Lucid Dreams: Decent song, it could be less beat heavy. The saving grace is the latter half where literally the band is going overkill and experimental. It would be worth it if Franz Ferdinand's new direction was like Radiohead as opposed to this reggae thing they were doing for the last half hour of the album. You can almost close your eyes and feel yourself in a dance club just feeling high off the last two minutes of the song. It's actually quite awesome. It's just so in and out, choppy yet put together.

11. Dream Again: Finally this roaring album is coming to a close, but not quite like 40' or Come On Home takes it.

12. Katherine Kiss Me: Similar to the acoustic of Eleanor Put Your Boots On. A soothing, good close. I actually own a vinyl of theirs, Bridge Over Troubled Water, which for $1 was a good deal, however warped and dog bitten the record and cover is... It is my favorite album of theirs. Both sides are solid. The album itself is kind of melancholy when you reflect back on their history and that it is their swan song album.

The Boxer has such great storytelling lyrics it downright floored me. Poetry put into song. Extra points for mentioning NYC (they're from there) because we all know the city kicks so much ass.

What's a favorite lyric without the words Bob Dylan next to them? I think some of the best, most influential lyrics can come from Bob Dylan. One of my favorites is Blowin' In The Wind, maybe the cover by Joan Baez too... since her voice sounds like silk against Dylan's nasaly sandpaper. Uh that was just one of the worst analogies I've ever made.
