New Hoarse tapes: horsing/Zebra Mu, Dotabata/Tar Pits + HNW

Been a bloody while, eh, fuckers? Well, I return a bearer of excellent fucking news. As of today the first two tapes on Hoarse Records are available. Hells. Yeahs. These things sound and look absolutely fucking ace. I could not be more excited!

HOA-029: Dotåbåtå/tar pits - Split (C36, ltd. 30)

The first tape here has two of Australia's finest drone/ambient señors showcasing some of their very best work. On the A side we find Carey of Dotåbåtå with what's probably his singularly most amazing work yet. An incredible track that builds so, so hauntingly from sombre, distant chimes to a crushing, droning thunder that will devour you whole. Incredible craftsmanship at display here. The B side has Dan of Tar Pits offering a beautifully understated work that is all soft crumblings and tumblings, a crescendo constantly about to happen - yet it doesn't, and the tension is maintained wonderfully throughout. Fucking ace!

HOA-030: horsing/Zebra Mu - Split (C22, ltd. 40)

This split's been in the making for a long while but it's finally seeing the light of day, thankfully. First new horsing material since the Forced Change set on Cantankerous, displaying yet another side of this noise project; gore movie samples, 80s synth soundtracks, Yukiko Okada and a barrage of screechy white noise. Exhilirating track. Whoever has heard but a second of Michael of Zebra Mu's sound art knows what to expect: quality only. His side of the tape is filled with crunches, scrapes and gorgeous feedback put together minutely to result in outstanding, wonderful material. Intelligent and heartfelt noise.

A new release from Japanese HNW artist Female Harakiri, delving once more into darkness. Violent crackle over murderous low rumbles.

Both come with pro printed artwork and on pro printed red tapes.

Where Is This – Fucker (3” cdr, ltd. 30)

Where Is This? Yes, that’s pretty much what I’m wondering. As soon as Fucker breaks loose I am disoriented – the fuck? Where Is This would seem to be a matter of locus – place – but if you ask me, it’s about a state of mind – which, it seems, is nothing other than loco (en el coco, yes). Within seconds, Fucker transports you straight into Mark Ward’s head, and you’re not sure whether this is a fully comfortable spot at all. Things loom and lurk, then tempt, and then draw you in; sickly sweetness pulling you into full-on harsh darkness. Twenty minutes and a good pummeling later you’re spewed out again – Being Mark Ward; eat that, Spike Jonze – bruised and beaten, destroyed – longing, yearning for another go. Fucker will bring you down.

Bruital Orgasme – Elle Sait (3” cdr, ltd. 30)

Elle Sait – She Knows. Seldom a title was both so serene and so haunting. A matter-of-factliness combined with complete uncertainty, and I cannot help but wonder who, what, why. A dozen listens into the track itself I still haven’t managed to figure it out – but in that purest of ambiguity lies, perhaps, the greatest possible beauty. Easily one of the most achieved and intriguing works of the pair of Fil and Nath, who, together, have been unleashing their unique brand of electronic extremities on the world for these last few years. Highly recommended.

Sendot Sklin - The Black Mausoleum (3" CDr)

First label release of this Dutch project. Formed from the ashes of Granuloma Inguinale, Dennis of Sendot Sklin has scraped all those ashes together, and the rubble and the junk and the scraps, and has been melting them all together to shape sounds as fresh as they are rotten to their very core. The Black Mausoleum is comprised of a single, nearly 25-minute track that starts out as a cold, eerie drone that steadily yet uncontrollably wraps round and round itself to start dipping into atonality, distortion, and onwards and onwards, and the eerie drone develops into a full-blown eerie stream of noise, and it's blissful and divine and haunting, ghostly, unstoppable. Quite simply, a fucking masterpiece.

Female Harakiri - Chainsaw Majini (3" CDr)

The first in a new subseries on Hoarse dedicated entirely to Resident Evil themed harsh noise walls. Japanese hnw-unit Female Harakiri has recently started gaining some attention and praise, its excellent label debut Glorious Death on No Hotel having been described as "not HNW [but] HARSH NOISE WALLS". Chainsaw Majini is just along those lines; ultra harsh, ultra brutal, crumbling, a vicious wall of unforgiving crackle, its atmosphere perfectly fitting and amazingly evoking the grimness of Resident Evil 5, a dried out, saturated, murderous darkness. As the track unfolds, you can almost feel the anonymous chainsaw-bearer jamming the screaming teeth of his blood-stained weapon into your throat. Violent, sinister, nightmarish. Great.

new horsing 3" DRUM DRUM OVERLORD + some distro ish

Okay, just received these so if anyone wants to trade hit me up, I have a good bunch!

new horsing - Drum Drum Overlord (NO HOTEL RECORD 3")

Drum Drum Overlord is something of a tribute to Hanatarash (despite the label’s claim of “NO TRIBUTE”) – as much may be obvious from the name, a clear nod to Dub Dub Overlord – and was conceived as something of a messy junk album much alike the bulk of material on 2 and 3. The approach was similar (sweaty and messy), but the sounds ultimately are not much like Hanatarash. The only source here is (overdriven, abused) drums but the sound is best described as shrill harsh over a barely audible steady drum beat (which is Anal Beethoven-ish). Fun in a bun! The artwork is a variation of Gero’s All You Need Is Audio Shock where instead two men with giant drums for heads are fondling each other. Three-‘page’ Xeroxed fold-out in a plastic sleeve. Looks neat though.

I also have some copies of the previous NO HOTEL releases, namely a CDR by Super Mario Bros of which I can’t read the title and a 3” (with just 5 mins of music though?) from The Princess Amen called GO GO SECOND TIME VIRGIN!. The first one is a manic and schizophrenic collection of noise, found sounds, ambient, songs and whatever (really stupid), the second is a nice and fuzzy ambient track. Both are quite enjoyable I guess.

1-2-3-4 horsemen, billowing flames, agonized tortured screams - it is indeed: the apocalypse alright. Such extremity, finality, is exactly what is SUPERGAU, and no other title could be more suitable for such a chilling, harrowing and captivating end-of-the-world work such as this. Eerie and hyper-kinetic to no end (except the Very End of All Things, Biblical or no), much apocalyptically SUPERGAU is a collapse of all things into a single chaos, a disintegration of all that is colourful and bright into a pure noise. No overdubs, no shit, only fuck awesome.

HOA-017: Flesh Coffin - Leichendiener 3" (ltd. 30)

And so, the morgue - for those of us godless akin the purgatory, that sole one stop before a sleep forever. But consider those who inhabit such a place of transition - have done so since long before, and will do so long after. What comes of they who live evermore among the fleeting, those who shun finality? Such is the fate of the Leichendiener; his place is among what is unchanging yet unending; endless rows of corpses run underneath his caressing fingers - what comes of him? All unblooms, darkens, clouds over - and all that remains is static; lifeless, deathless, endless, loveless. Andreas Brandal captures brilliantly the Leichendiener in sound - crippled and crackling noise bursts unavoidably plunging towards a wall of static. Incredible.

To experience bafflement, utter wonder and admiration, at inventiveness, creativity, is something wholly rare - and something wholly satisfying. To run one’s hands over the Codex Seraphinianus - an encyclopedia of the fantastic in illegible script - is to wonder and to admire at the inventiveness and creativity (or summarize as you see fit: genius, brilliance, etc.), yet also at how it is so remarkably encyclopaedic, to mean all-encompassing, as to what it purports to be; a manuscript, a physical, actual document, of what unexists. Similarly, one wonders at Boar and Zebra Mu’s split recording - as the Codex, it stands as a document of the fantastic, the imaginative and unimaginable, its scope encyclopaedic, making tangible what lies just beyond the reach of imagination. To hear such beauty and ugliness, so skilfully juxtaposed, exposed, that is when we experience wonder.

HOA-014: Dotåbåtå - Undergrowth I (3", ltd. 30)

“[The […] boom came towards us, deadened by the mist, and heavily rolled away along the low grounds by the river […]” – Undergrowth I collapse into a single image. The first in a series (spread the good news; More is to come!), this disc is the latest document in Dotåbåtå’s steady and fascinating climb towards the perfection of, well, Dotåbåtå. Stripped of all things digital (and recorded directly to cheap two track 1/4” tape), Undergrowth I combines the transparency of analog sound with the density and weight so distinctly Dotåbåtå – wonderful, admirable, unavoidable. Through gradually building drones and occasional eruptions, the piece crawls from an almost soothing lightness to a severe, sharp atonality, crashing into us, crushing us - but we embrace it.

Edition of 30; white 3” discs in mini DVD-cases with leaf-paper for covers and a small envelope with a picture and insert. Looks and sounds absolutely lovely – easily one of the finest things to’ve come out on Hoarse yet.

Thirty minutes into the film, the graphic sex grinds to an abrupt halt; the girl, tied in rope, gets a bat to the head; flinches, faints, wakes up to find herself half-wrapped in bandages.
