Its that time of year again... and no im not talking about the christmas spirit (which is boyant within me all season anyways). im talking about time to reflect on this past year's great and not so great releases and to pick a winner for 2008 album of the year.
so as you may know, i listen to a lot of music. no really? yes, i do. and i spend a lot of time listening to complete albums and new releases, as opposed to just listening to singles or having background music on. in doing so, you must remember to have a good system. sounds obvious? yes, but it is very important, because with most speakers and systems, you are missing half the music. last year's winner was DJ Vadim's 'Soundcatcher'. the production on the album is amazing, but most people don't even realize it due to their weak sound systems that just pump bass and treble... you only hear the beat, not the music. asside from having a good sound system it is important to give an album many listens. a lot of albums (like my 2003 runner-up Jaylib's Champion sound, which fell short to Jedi Mind Tricks - Vision of Ghandi) will grow on you, even if you don't like them upon first listen. over the years it has grown on me even more. if i had to make that selection again, i think it would definitely have been number 1.
so towards the end of the year, i tend to look at all the LPs i have collected that have been released over the past year and pick a few top ones. then for the next month or so, i listen to those and pick a winner.
at times, its really hard to pick one album, especially because i listen to all different types of music. but i suck it up and do my best. Last years winner was a no brainer. Soundcatcher was a classic! though it had tough competition, it pretty much blew the other albums out of the water.

so, drum roll please.... this years nominees for album of the year are (in no particular order):

2008 ALBUM OF THE YEAR NOMINEES:

Thievery Corporation - Radio Retaliation

its been three long years since thievery corp's last release 'Cosmic Game'. in my opinion, cosmic game was way too dubbed out. this album isn't like that as much and you get a feel for their old stuff. Radio Retaliation still brings that great international sound and you could always count on great vocals. 'beautiful drug' is a beautiful song, and the album is definitely worth your dimes. a vinyl copy is a great addition to your library. you can always expect to DJs/producers from Paris to be making good sound. ;-)

Rupa & the April Fishes - eXtraOrdinary rendition

this is their first album as a group. individually all extremely talented musicians. you can think of them as Gotan Project without a DJ. Having been born in India and living in between Paris and Southern California, Rupa's work (doctor & professor at University of San Francisco) drives her passion for love and music. Her life experiences and inspiration really come out in this album and the band brings a diverse sound from all over the world. After their U.S. tour and many sneak peaks of unrecorded material, fans can anticipate their next album to be just as extraordinary.

Jack Johnson - Sleep Through The Static

you could always expect a great album from Jack Johnson. his last release was the soundtrack to the movie 'curious george' which i do not count as one of his albums because it was my for kids and a cartoon and was meant to be more of a sing-along album. though it had a couple songs that stood out, its not what i expect from jack j. from hearing my very first jack johnson track, i knew this guy would be making great music for a long time. this being his fourth release (without counting the soundtrack), some expected, and still argue, that his style has changed. but to me, its still the same great stuff. such a soothing voice. this album has received a lot of criticism, but i judge for myself, and so should you.

Freddie Foxxx - Crazy Like a Foxxx

this album was recorded in 1994 but never released. a few underground bootleg tapes were tossed around here and there at very low quality. the digitaly remastered version has finally come out (ive waited 14 years) and still bangs your system harder than the trash hip hop being put out nowadays. this one is a classic album for you 90s hip hop lovers and even features a track with Tupac back when he was somethin of an up and comer.

Kraak & Smaak - Plastic People

i know most of you, well actually all of you (except marc who saw like maybe 5 minutes and pamela who stayed for the whole thing), missed out on this one, but Kraak & Smaak Live is something else. After their UCSD show (which none of you went to) and their LA show (which none of you went to either cuz you were at my show instead!) they continued their U.S. tour bringing a european mix of House and Funk to an unexpecting crowd. and it banged. as well their smash hits 'squeez me' and 'aint gona take it (mad as hell)' have been giving the internet a good buzz. if you don't know how to dance, these guys will get you movin like you never thought you could!

RUNNER UPPERS:
- these albums didnt quite make it to the top but are still worth mentioning.

Black Milk - Tronic

this is black milk's third album. you would think its hard to upstage his sophomore release 'popular demand' but this album really gives you a run for your money. great production, and you could always count on him to bring some catchy hooks, loose fit beats, and janky snares. some people say hip hop is dead, well i say its forever, especially with artists like Black Milk, the 21 year-old kid from Detroit. though some tracks were a bit off, especially towards the end of the album (in my opinion where it should be the strongest) it fell a bit short. However as the great artist Da Vinci once said 'simplicity is the ultimate form of sophistication'. Tronic is a perfect representation of the statement.

Morcheeba - Dive Deep

so its been a long time since their last album. but ever since morcheeba parted with their main singer (i forget her name as of right now) their material has weakened from their classic first few albums. this one is a good effort, not their best. if you want to relax and listen to some solid downtempo, go for it.

Xploding Plastix - Treated Timber Resists Rot

like nothing you've ever heard before, xploding plastix is a duo based out of Oslo that sounds like a pinball machine in a gigantic blender. i dont know if you could call this acid jazz but their name suites them well. this being their follow up full length to 'amateur girls go proskirt agents' you could expect something quite intriguing. some sounds however are too akward and obscure... some call it creative, i call it unecessary. still great work.

FLOPS & LET DOWNS:

Red Snapper - A Pale Blue Dot

is this even the same band? i dont know about you (actually i do... none of you have even heard of these guys) but i fell in love with red snapper's moody acid jazz right off the bat... and i waited a while for this one. i understand their sound is changing, but i mean cmon, this aint no big band heavy metal group, and the intro to 'wanga doll' sounds like it could be. too band oriented, they lack a good producer or DJ. if it were another band, this album might be okay, but not as a red snapper release. i mean these are the guys that brought you the classic 'our aim is to satisfy'.. even the side drummer's project 'toob' was a bit of a disapointment. out of the 8 tracks (two of the 8 being remixes), there are maybe two worth keeping and one of them is a spin off of an old jazz track that wasnt their material... it is a nice interpretation though, ill give them that... and i definately dig on 'Clam'. thats the snapper sound im looking for!

Immortal Technique - 3rd World

the only positive is that psycho realm was on one of the tracks. immortal talks about shooting up the grammys and such... i get it, youre underground, but stick to what made you famous: the conspiracies and anti big gov't activism. 'Mistakes' was pretty much the only good track on that album. after a long awaited third album (to follow up 'Revolutionary Vol. 2), 3rd world is a major disappointment... im glad i found the bootleg.

The Herbaliser - Same As It Never Was

i really wish this album "never was". we've waited a while to hear a new herbaliser album. with time, you could expect change. but this one really hurts. its big band & noisy, not what youre used to chill out with from the herbaliser. theres maybe one track on there worth your time. even the artwork is an eyesore.

Jedi Mind Tricks - A History of Violence

this being JMT's sixth studio album, bringing back Jus Allah was key to bring back the old JMT fans. the ones of the 90s and 'violent by design era'. if youre a JMT enthusiest you may enjoy this album, however nothing can really match their 2000 release, and jus allah really delivers horribly on this album its almost irritating. As well, Vinnie didnt set forth his best effort. however you can always expect bangin' classical beats out of Stoupe. Its a let down if you expected a follow up to VBD, and some JMT fans call it the same ol' stuff. nothing new, and doesnt stand out. jus allah really makes the album hard to listen to. i find myself skipping to the next track everytime his verse comes on. a few solid singles though, have a listen to 'Godflesh' and 'Monolith'.

2008 SINGLES:

Ghostland Observatory - Dancing on my Grave
*gotta love that old school dance sound

Kraak & Smaak - Squeeze Me
* a mix of funk/house or whatever you wana call it, this is a great feel good/dance track (the remixes are great too)

Jedi Mind Tricks - Godflesh
* you can always expect a bangin' single out of a JMT album, even off a weak album

albums to look forward to in 2009?:
Gorillaz (not sure of the album title yet)
*Gorillaz have been back in the studio workin' on a follow up to their amazing 2005 release 'demon days'
Dj Vadim - U Can't Lurn Imaginashun
*a follow up to 'soundcatcher'? thats pretty much impossible, but ive been hearing scraps of bits and pieces hes put out through the internet and it sounds amazing. hope those tracks make the album though.
Deltron - Event ii
*supposed to be released in spring, but it keeps getting pushed back. lets hope it at least comes out in 2009
Dr Dre - Detox
*rumors had it, it would be released before the end of this year, right around holiday shopping, etc... however its a bit late. if hes kept us waiting this long, it can't be a disappointment. and if it is, then the doc's really lost it. doubtfull.
Cutloose - Cut
*you've seen him live. check out his first studio album with the smash single 'come into my life'. (im currently working on a remix of this one)

p.s. im no good at album reviews

im kindof fedup with all this.... so heres some tips to follow.

Look I understand that when i spin, i am working for a crowd. But people (you, the audience) must realize that I know what im doing. If im playing Dro in the Wind, chances are, i have the track Sugar…. You don’t need to recommend it. and dont tell me to play the song that i am already mixing in, why dont u just listen for a bit. Another thing; if im in the middle of mixing a record into another record, or if im scratching, IM BUSY, don’t tap me on the shoulder six million times, don’t call me a dick for not answering you right away, and please if you’re a girl trying to flirt with me, or were dating, don’t walk off all pissed and think im a dick or im mad at you for something; im focused, concentrated, and I cant talk while mixing. I will acknowledge you if you stick around patiently, once I have a few seconds between switching records, or stay around after my set, we’ll chat it up, ill buy you a few drinks.
You (as the audience) have got to realize that we aren’t just pushing random buttons and playing tracks, we’re good at what we do, its very difficult, and we’ve practiced countless hours, put a lot of effort and energy into what we do, and we are putting on a show for you. I think most people don’t realize that talent that there is behind DJing. I mean if a band is playing on stage, would you seriously go up to the lead singer or guitarist and stop him from doing what he’s doing to request a song? Give these guys a break man, they work hard, it’s a lot of heavy equipment, and it’s just me, one man, about 5 ft 10’, not too built, trying to carry all these heavy amps and speakers, not to mention the endless cases of records which are probably the heaviest part of my equipment. I already have back problems and im only in my early twenties. Thank god I have a good chiropractor. Secondly, you’re drunk. You don’t know what you’re saying, im on the job, most likely sober…ish…. So please don’t tell me how to do my job, or mumble incomprehensible gibberish and request songs that don’t even exist or that you don’t know the name of. And if a song has already been played, don’t request it again.
NEVER touch our equipment; ive had whole parties go to shit because someone wrecked my amp. Ive had drunk people try to do what I do while my back is turned and see what happens when they touch the record in the middle of my mix… well let me tell ya so u don’t have to experiment on someone else and fuck up their show… it fucks up the mix and sounds horrible! Ive had drunken partiers literally fall on my equipment and ruin everything. Don’t put your drinks on my table, they will get knocked by someone else and spill all over my stuff. And lastly don’t start fights near the DJ booth. Because who will get the blame for ruining the party? The DJ. Oh and im not a frekin’ lost and found or a locker or anything so don’t ask me to keep your purse or hide your drinks or whatever.
Another rule: don’t just go digging through my records while my back is turned. You can ask me if I have a track and ill let you know. I bought every single one of those records so I know exactly what I do or do not have. If you’re a DJ and you wana hop on the tables too…. well, it honestly depends if we’re at a club or at a private party, and it really depends on if you know what you’re doing or not, but you gota realize that it is my show, and I got the gig. You don’t go up to a band and say, “hey, im a better guitarist then you, let me hop on your guitar.” Respect my space, and leave it to me. Do you go up right next to a drummer or a guitarist in the middle of his set and headbang right in front of him? No, stay on the dance floor, its designated for you.
Now, as for spinning private parties; you’ve got to understand, I do what the owner tells me. If he says to lower the volume because the cops are outside, that’s what im going to do. So don’t yell at me to higher the music… trust me, if it were up to me, I’d have it louder than you can even stand. If I do raise the volume after ive been told to turn it down, ill get yelled at by the person im working for. Im sick of having drunk bitches yell at me to turn it up because they wana get nasty with some random douche they just met on the dance floor. Ive had whole crowds get heated and start throwing shit at me because they were having such a good time dancing and I had to stop because of a noise complaint. And who gets all the heat for turning it down? The DJ…. Damn, I feel like Collin Powell in front of the UN taking the heat for Bush.
A good DJ should be able to read his crowd. That’s my rule of thumb. If they ain’t feeling the tempo im goin for, ill speed it up. If they want less gangster rap, ill play your Nelly Furtado. But I will never play Britney Spears… My Humps is the shittiest music that I can stand. You (the DJ) know you’ve done a good job if you went the whole night without getting one request. Last night, 6 hours straight, not one request… and I think I covered every style of music. I am respectful of my crowd until they disrespect me. I get paid well for what I do, and so you should expect me to perform well. If you would like something different, just ask politely, as simple as that. All I ask of you is the respect, and realize that we aren’t robots, or tools, or machines that pop out a soda once you enter a bill. If a DJ is good, tell him so. If you like the Ol’ Skool flashback No Diggety he’s playing, give him a thumbs up while your dancing partners too busy rubbing your butt. He’ll appreciate that. And if the DJ has a tip jar, and you got some extra nickels, toss him a few. It’s a difficult job and it’s a lot of work and money that we have to put into one single night for you to be carefree and dance for a few hours. Last night I had one lady even bring me a glass of water, she saw I was sweatin so much because I was so concentrated on what I was doing. I was so thankful, I asked her what song she wanted to hear next; it was one of my personal favorites, so I threw it on instead of whatever was going to come up next.
Another rule, if the DJ says last call, get yourself a drink, and you’ve gota realize he’s only got a couple tracks left to play before the pigs come to shut him off. So dance your ass off. Those are pretty simple rules right?
Now let me tell you. Most DJs are not like me. Most DJs are doing it for the image, the women, and the money. Most DJs have absolutely no talent, they just have a really nice setup that mommy and daddy bought them. (p.s. I live in L.A. so its probably different out in Europe) Most DJs have absolutely no musical knowledge. You’ve gota realize that I listen to pretty much every type of music there is, as long as its good. And to me, whats good is not what plays on the radio, and that’s what I have to play for you. But I don’t spend all day listening to the radio and reading top 40 charts to know what to get. So if I haven’t heard of the Cee-Lo song youre looking for, its not because I don’t know music. Trust me, ive heard a lot more stuff than you ever have or ever will. The thing is, I don’t spend too much time on the radio stuff, because…..well, the radio plays it. So I don’t need to. I have plenty of music that will get you to dance, trust me. Last night early on, right after dinner, I got 50 year olds to dance, and feel like a teenagers all over again.
Things to look for while noticing a bad DJ. 1. Appearance: Overly flashy. Whether its his clothes, his lights, or his speakers. 2. Acoustics are way off, all you hear is bass kicks and snares, you hear only the rhythm, not the music. 3. Advertisements everywhere… obviously means hes a tool and a product and he cant make anything of himself 4. is on the mic. between each song (means he doesn’t know how to mix) 5. there’s a whole crew of them on one set of turntables and they’re all bumpin’ their heads like ghetto black people while their mix is totally off. 6. they only use final scratch or serato and don’t have any real vinyl. 7. over excessiveness of lights so u get lost in the lights and don’t pay attention to the music 8. only plays top 40, nothing original, no old skool songs, and you know every song he’s played all night 9. Repetition of songs… means his collection is small (most likely like his pennnnnnnnnevermind…..) and lastly 10. He doesn’t have Technics (hahah gotcha suckers!)
So those are the DJs you could talk shit to, because theyre tools, and they have no talent whatsoever. Don’t tip them, and don’t think theyre amazing because they have fancy equipment. Chances are theyre fools and get their music offline, and follow the top 40 charts on every radio station.
Anywho, im all about having a good time, and if youre down to party, so am i. but don’t treat me like shit because the only reason youre getting laid tonight is because my show was good enough to find u some guy to connect to on the dance floor and get you both shakin!

oh, and one last "rule"... more like a suggestion, if the DJ needs a beer, get him a beer, chances are he's got a tab opened, if youre kind enough to get me a drink on my tab, get yourself one as well on me... chances are, the bars letting me drink for free.

peace,

well, im an expiramentalist. and on the decks i like to mix things that haven't been mixed before. like, "oh an Amon tobin track is playing? let's hear janis joplin's vocals on it"... wait, that sounded like crap, but you get the idea.
i love my setup... its not the most expensive thing but its the most beautiful thing in the world. M3D, Mk5, and two limited edition technics, plated in 24k gold running through rane mixers.
enough talk, lets get to work:
so what am i doing? well ive actually got a few projects in mind.

im piecing together different demos & mixes of 80s, hip hop, & other such fun stuff, but the project im really focusing on is the following:

putting together a mix album, featuring all kinds of music, and incorporating live instruments and vocalists. (i hope it turns out good) im going to be starting out with some downtempo, trip hop, loungey minimal type stuff, then get more into the uptempo jazz, acid jazz, breakbeat, electronica stuff. (take a look at my library and the of artists i listen to; imagine all of that in a blender and poured over your head).
on top of all this ill be including some original material hopefuly if it ever gets done, and some local singers are dropping by the studio to be adding some vocals. you'll definately get a feel for some hip hop here and there because of its influence its had on my life. as well, ill be throwing in some live instruments, and messing around with a Korg guitar effects pod hooked up to my tables and mixer (i really like the sounds im getting out of that, try it out if you ever get a chance)
so after countless hours of practice, i'm going to record this album.. this mix album is going to be recorded on the fly, one-time, live, in front of a very very exclusive and select audience... or on second thought, i may just have a mid-night jam sesh, hit the decks spur of the moment, and press the record button. this album is going to be performed over four technics, acoustic guitars and basses, a few mics, keyboards... and it is meant to be live, so you may see me at some club someday bringing the show to you. with four decks, two mixers, keyboards and a few mics, the possibilities are endless. im a vinyl purist because of its amazing sound so i wont be using serato scratch (takes all the fun out of digging, and defeats the purpose of what makes technics so great, and a musician so passionate about his work on turntables) and a lot of my records are old, i will try to eliminate as much backround noise as possible, but no promisses.

i do live shows of all kinds, been doing a lot of 80s and funk/disco breaks lately at my shows, but it changes all the time, so most of my time is spent preparing and performing. if youre in my area or im in yours, stop by and get movin'!

im definately open to suggestions, so anything else you may want to hear on the album or at my live sets or think i should experiment with, let me know. when it will be done? no idea, my life is hectic right now, so any free time i get (which is really little) is on the turntables.

cheers!
