Lo-Fi Sunshine: Woods – At Echo Lake

I had the good fortune of catching Woods open for my favorite psychedelic Swedes, Dungen, last August at Johnny Brenda’s in Fishtown. At first I wasn’t sure what to expect. One band member kneeled on the floor the entire stage with an old cassette tape player and a mic making all sorts of static noise loops while the rest of the band appeared to be playing on equiptment that was swiped out of a 60’s pawn shop. Little did I know I would be getting some sort of wonderful fusion between The Velvet Underground, The Byrds, and Animal Collective. Now upon the heels of glorious SXSW buzz and hype they’re releasing a most anticipated follow up to their very stellar Songs of Shame LP.

Read more at samcoren.com

It’s been a long time since I’ve heard a band with as much fun and energy as Louisiana’s GIVERS. The indie pop group combines tropical and afro-beat rhythms with sugary sweet boy/girl vocal harmonies – a lethal combination for catchiness. Their self-titled EP was on heavy rotation in my car at the end of last year and slowly faded out in fear of overplaying the only four songs they have out. Recent news of a debut full-length slated for release this summer and a spring/summer national tour has forced me to revisit this Lafayette buzz band.

Read more at www.samcoren.com

Goldfrapp - Head First

Now let’s get this straight – I love almost everything Goldfrapp touches. Everything except the last full length release, Seventh Tree, which only contained one redeemable track. When I heard a new Goldfrapp album was in the pipeline a few months ago my excitement was met with a tinge of hesitation. Would we be getting another half-baked attempt at sounding like an M83 rip off? Or would the goddess of electro-glam be making a reappearance? Turns out the ‘frapp has awakened from their slumber and decided to bust back onto dance floors across the globe with their latest LP effort Head First.
