Tonight LA electronic dandy Daedelus gives us a live monome set (the monome is a box of delights, look it up on Youtube). Doing a DJ and AV set is DJ Food, playing live is new Ninja signee Grasscut, pioneer of experimental music that you actually want to dance to, then DJing into the early hours we have King Cannibal and, hopping over from Lo Recordings, the magnificent Cursor Miner, aka the electro Syd Barrett. This is a feast of hot Ninja Tune meat.

Jimmy Screech Live @ Cargo on 11 Jul 2009

Location: Cargo

JIMMY SCREECH LIVE @ CARGO
This ones gonna be big.

DJ Vadim -
Hardest working man in show business? Trouper? Tireless? However you want to put it, be sure of one thing, when DJ Vadim first heard the phrase "Don’t sleep” he obviously took it literally.

Trojan Sound System comprises -

Selectors - Earl Gateshead and Daddy Ad
Earl Gateshead began DJ'ing in Brixton in 1979.He is well known in London for his 20 year residency at The Dive Bar in London's Chinatown and his Saturday residency at the legendary Blue Note club. He has worked as selector and MC with Cutty Ranks, Big Youth, Dr Alimantado, and Dennis Alcapone. His reggae nights at Plastic People received Worldwide recognition. Daddy Ad comes from Roots and Reality Soundsystem and has worked with Eek-A-Mouse and Tappa Zukie, for example and has always, like Earl, pushed for new sounds and acts. his background as a full time drummer and audiohead means he is responsible for the sound system's FX, mixdowns and sound. As well as co selecting with Earl.

Vocalists - Superfour and Chucky Banton
The Sound System's vocalists have twenty years experience as members of the great South London Sound Systems: , Taurus, Sir Coxsone and Saxon. They have been chosen as the absolute cream of London's Reggae entertainers. Legendary Recording Artists including Lee Perry, Dr Alimantado, Tippa Irie, Dillinger, Dennis Alcapone, Horace Andy and Gregory Isaacs have all worked with the Sound System.

Jimmy Screech -
You may already be aware of rising British Hip/Hop reggae star Jimmy Screech from the success of his previous singles ‘Wood 4 The Treez’ released in December 2008 to critical acclaim and ‘Scandalous’ released in April 2009. After an incredible run of dates supporting the legendary Roots Manuva in October, Jimmy returned to the stage with Californian Hip Hop trio Ugly Duckling accompanying them on their entire run of January dates. He also recently performed at the ‘Detonate’ festival in Nottingham alongside world renowned Hip Hop star Ghostface Killer . As well as stirring up the crowd alongside Mark Ronson at London’s cult gig ‘YOYOs’ in Nottinghill Gate.

With his young history drenched in roots reggae traditions, along with the influences he drew from attending hip hop jams whilst growing up on the estates of South east London, Jimmy found himself creating a whole new sound; "I knew my music was different from everyone else’s but I didn't really know what to do with it".

Gaining prior street level success recording and releasing his own music with underground acts like Ray Keith, Genuwine and Urban Gemz, Jimmy is set for big things in 2009. Now signed to exciting new label MAP MUSIC Ltd, we’re proud to present Jimmys third single (a double single release) ‘JAMAICA/FLY AWAY’, an energetic, club-shaking, uptempo dance track from the new album due for release in September 2009.

Jimmy is hailed as the ‘Hip-Hop-Dub-step Champion’ never scared of fusing unusual sounds.

Be sure to catch one of his unmissable live shows over the coming months you won’t be disappointed.

Soundcrash: Trojan Soundsystem + DJ Vadim on 11 Jul 2009

Location: Cargo

Its a true summer jam this July at Cargo, exploiting the fine yard to it's highest potential, and ramming some mighty-fine chillin tunage into the arches. With Reggae Bohemoths The Trojan Soundsytem live on stage, along with DJ Vadim and Jimmy Screech to continue the reggae tinged flavour.

Formed in 2004 from London Sound System legends, The Trojan Sound System has already had hugely successful shows as a single entity and with the greatest names in reggae, representing the label that has been the home of British Reggae, Ska and Roots since 1968. The Sound System comprises selectors Earl Gateshead and Daddy Ad, and Vocalists Superfour and Chucky Banton.

Earl Gateshead began DJ'ing in Brixton in 1979.He is well known in London for his 20 year residency at The Dive Bar in London's Chinatown and his Saturday residency at the legendary Blue Note club. His reggae nights at Plastic People received Worldwide recognition. Daddy Ad comes from Roots and Reality Soundsystem and, like Earl, always pushed for new sounds and acts. his background as a full time drummer and audiohead means he is responsible for the sound system's FX, mixdowns and sound, as well as co selecting with Earl. The System's vocalists have twenty years experience as members of the great South London Sound Systems: Taurus, Sir Coxsone and Saxon. They have been chosen as the absolute cream of London's Reggae entertainers for our summer jam tonight.

Riding high since the release of his latest album 'U can't learn Imaginashun' DJ Vadim returns to Cargo's stage with a ska-tinged bounce in his step, and no doubt he will be prepared to rock the house in his own inimitable style. IF the LP is anything to go by you can expect the perfect balance between hip-hop and reggae, there couldn't be a more fitting DJ for a night such as this!

www.myspace.com/djvadim

Having been 'spotted' by Roots Manuva in 2005 Jimmy Screech has utilised this super-cool hook-up more than anyone could have imagined, bringing his unique 'reggae-rap' sound to the masses on 2 Roots Manuva national tours. Rapping, singing, freestyling, it's all the same to this young talent, and his attitude is that of a true forward thinker. With massive interest from Mary Anne-Hobbs and Jo Wiley expect big things from this South London MC.

www.myspace.com/jimmyscreechmusic

Ultra-cool live-stylings from the Gentleman's Dub Club, Leeds' heavyweight live 11 piece dub collective, will wetten appetites more than suitably bringing pure fire to the dancefloor. Bass-heavy, brass-tinted percussion-fuelled dubs as timeless as the genre itself to leave you satisfied yet hungry for more.

www.myspace.com/gentlemansdubclub

London-based Tokyo child Anchorsong makes great music! Plain and simple. Heavy, technical beats laden with synth-harmonies and moving chord-changes, all set to the beautiful sound (and sight in this case!) of his all-girl string-quartet, he came reccomended to us by DJ Krush and the high-accolade is easily matched by his pure, raw talent.

TV on the Radio + Noisettes at O2 Academy Brixton, London on 13 Jul 2009

Location: O2 Academy Brixton

TV ON THE RADIO’s career has established them as one of the most exciting and genuinely innovative bands to have emerged from the American musical underground in years. Winners of the Shortlist prize - The US equivalent of the Mercury music prize - and a devoted global fanbase.

Difficult to classify, their music is often described as art rock or post-punk, but is educated by a diverse spectrum of styles including freeform jazz and a cappella music, psychedelia and trip-hop, modern soul and classic ’90s indie rock, giving them a unique and original sound. The core members are Tunde Adebimpe (vocals, loops), David Andrew Sitek (guitars, keyboards, loops) and Kyp Malone (vocals, guitars, loops), but the band is accompanied by additional members when performing live.

TV On The Radio's loose approach to songwriting, recording and performing leaves an incredible amount of room for instrument-swapping and role reversals. Rather than rely on a stringent and stale guitars/bass/drums/vocals setup, the quintet often brings home-demoed sketches to the studio along with the attitude that a track needs to go through everyone's filter before it becomes a fully formed song.

On the Saturday 1st August Field Day returns to Victoria Park for its third annual summer extravaganza. Field Day will be one of this summer’s essential festivals and with early bird tickets already sold out, you need to be quick off the mark to snap up yours before this event sells out.

Kicking off proceedings for 2009, Field Day is ecstatic to announce Mogwai as their headline act. The critically acclaimed Scottish rock group, formed by Stuart Braithwaite and Dominic Aitchison in 1995, have since become one of the most influential and best known names in post-rock, they have curated the ATP Festival, sold out The Albert Hall, London and last year released their sixth album 'The Hawk Is Howling'.

Drawing on influences from Joy Division, Pink Floyd, The Jesus and Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine and post-rock pioneers Slint, Mogwai are the masters of the soft/loud dynamic, as they create a wall of sound that reaches beyond the tumultuous guitars, discovering twinkling optimism in fragile instrumentation and sensitive synths. The lyric-free songs are awe-inspiring and yet accessible.

Domino Record’s amazing ambient electro wizard, Four Tet, will be returning to Field Day, after his mind-blowing performance at its inaugural event two years ago, to play his first live set in London in over a year. Four Tet will be playing new material as he mixes up gloriously rich synthesizer arpeggios; crisp clusters of disco percussion and melodic flourishes.

Former Arab Strap multi-instrumentalist Malcolm Middleton will also be making an appearance at this year’s Field Day. As part of the now-defunct Falkirk duo, he spent 11 years peddling seedy, sweaty tales of cheap booze, late nights and sexual perversion, and his burgeoning solo career seems to be running along the same thematic lines. Working with numerous luminaries from the Glasgow scene, it’s Malcolm and his songs, however, which are the stars here, confirming Middleton's status as one of the best songwriters of his generation.

With the release of his fourth album, ‘When The Haar Rolls In’, at the end of last year, the softly spoken James Yorkston adds a wonderfully folkish element to Field Day’s line up that will complement its village fete vibe. And adding a large slice of funk to this year’s event is Brooklyn’s eccentric party starters Apes and Androids. With famed live performances involving cheerleaders, giant silver skulls and Korean drum circles, this is a band you don’t want to miss.

Touted as natural successors to the mantle currently held by the likes of Battles, Hot Chip and LCD Soundsystem, Errors have been confirmed for a festival slot, plus Fennesz's pretty and melodic music, mixing bent instrumental pop, synth gurgles, white noise, ethereal vocal samples, serious Morricone vibes and much more will add to the spectacle, whilst Dubstep don DJ Skream will be laying down some deliciously jaw-wobbling bass.

Brought to you by London’s most adventurous and daring promoters - Eat Your Own Ears, Adventures In The Beetroot Field, Bugged Out! – Field Day will bring you the most cutting edge line up of bands and DJs in the 2009 Festival season. The heart of East London will be transformed into a Village Fete; 'Village Mentality', a Village Green area within the festival will supply the masses with some countrified fun and games away from sound systems and stages. Try your luck on the tombola, crack a few nuts on the coconut shy - or just sit on some haybales and stuff your face with homemade cake. Inspired by summer sports days and country fetes - Field Day's very own village green will host stalls and activities throughout the daytime, ranging from sack-racing, to whack-the-rat, Bowling for Bacon and lots more to be announced. Come along, have fun, eat baked goods, and as the country saying goes - "be like an ant in the days of summer”…

Arctic Circle presents: Helios - Goldmund - Rameses III on 11 Aug 2009

Location: Union Chapel

Arctic Circle in association with Type recordings presents:

Helios - Goldmund - Rameses III

[for those who enjoy the music of Peter Broderick, Max Richter, Dustin O'Halloran, Nico Muhly, Sylvain Chaveau and Hauschka]

Keith Kenniff was raised in rural Lancaster, Pennsylvania, Keith started playing drums, guitar and bass at a very young age. He played in a variety of touring bands, from rock to jazz and classical, and took influence from each situation, learning from the successes and inevitable failures, discovering his musical likes and dislikes. He was finally drawn to study percussion at Boston’s prestigious Berklee College of Music.

His primary musical venture is the solo project ‘Helios’, showcasing his skill in percussion, his delicate touch on the guitar, his measured and spacious songwriting, and his self-taught electro-acoustic production.

Another of Keith’s projects is, ‘Goldmund’, which saw the light of day with the release of ‘Corduroy Road’, a selection of solo piano recordings released on the young British label ‘Type Records’. This album was also well received internationally, and some of its tracks have been used in films and major television series.

Hear one set as Helios and another solo piano as Goldmund on this special evening.

Deerhunter + HEALTH + Crystal Antlers at Koko, London on 24 Aug 2009

Location: Koko

Deerhunter began in 2001 with the ambition of fusing the lulling hypnotic states induced by ambient and minimalist music with the klang and propulsion of garage rock. Co-founded by Bradford Cox and Moses Archuleta in Atlanta, the band have since produced three LPs and four EPs worth of astonishing "ambient punk" - their own description - picking up devotees and different musicians along the way. Their mantra is decisive: "to achieve harmony in bad taste is the height of elegance" and so far they haven't disappointed Jean Genet. Their live performances are almost always polarising and verge on the revelatory, so we're excited to have them play this show for us. Hot on the heels of their much acclaimed album 'Microcastle' on 4AD / Kranky, the band release a new EP, entitled 'Rainwater Cassette Exchange' digitally on May 18th and on physical formats on June 8th.

BBC Proms 2009 - PROM 54: MICHAEL NYMAN on 25 Aug 2009

Location: Royal Albert Hall

Now best known for his soundtracks to such movies as The Piano, Gattaca and Wonderland, Michael Nyman started out as a musicologist, editing scores by Handel and Purcell; as a critic he coined the term 'Minimalism'; and, as a composer he first made his name by putting the music of classical masters through the Minimalist mill to generate raunchy, rhythmically propulsive, raucously energetic new works, such as his score for Peter Greenaway's 1982 film The Draughtsman's Contract and the grief-frozen Memorial (which featured in Greenaway's later The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover) – both of which are Purcell-based.

Now, to celebrate the year's two big Baroque anniversaries the Michael Nyman Band makes its Proms debut with a new work echoing the Purcell and Handel pieces heard in Prom 53.

To accompany the Gay Icons exhibition, ICONIC is a programme of events which explore the darkly queer and uncannily bright side of icons - the fantasy, emotion, cult, deceit, promiscuity, joy, desire, melancholy, beauty, sexuality, ambiguity and the one - through performance, film, music, literature, talks and walks.

Curated by Jonathan Keane with the National Portrait Gallery.

The Dodos at Bush Hall, London on 3 Sep 2009

Location: Bush Hall

THE DODOS are a duo from San Francisco, who throw together a delightful mix of ephemeral psych-folk-pop. Singer and guitarist Meric Long’s fleeting, intricate and finely-tuned finger-picking is warm and focused, resonating under his refined lyrical hopscotch and drummer Logan Kroeber’s foot-stomping tom and-tambourine back beat. The propulsive results recall everything from John Fahey to the Akron/Family, and hones the callings of free-spirited, unhinged acts like Animal Collective.

You would be mistaken when listening to their recordings that The Dodos consist of many more members than they actually do. The San Franciscan duo create beautifully orchestrated music, ranging from soft chanting and wistful lyrics, to escalating primal screams and frantic strumming. Visiter, their pioneering debut with ethereal vocals, tribal drumming and urgent guitars, was undoubtedly influenced by Meric's studies in West African drumming and experimentation with percussion including the inventive 'tambourine foot' which involves having a tambourine strapped to your foot.

"San Francisco duo the Dodos matches fleet strumming and picking with steady percussion and select other instrumentation, playing deceptively low-key songs that accrue a modest power like proverbial stones and moss" Time Out New York

No longer does “to go the way of the dodo” denote becoming an obsolete thing of the past. Instead, Meric Long—chief songwriter and guitarist of San Francisco-based duo the Dodos—gives the phrase a fresh new meaning, playing ephemeral psych-folk-pop music. Long’s fleeting, intricate and finely-tuned finger-picking is warm and focused, resonating under his refined lyrical hopscotch and drummer Logan Kroeber’s foot-stomping tom and-tambourine back beat. Last December, the band self-released its sensational full-length, Beware of the Maniacs, which it took on the road this year with Jennifer Gentle and Akron/Family. It’s only a matter of time before the Dodos really get the attention they truly deserve. And it won’t be because they’re extinct."

SOME INTERESTING FACTS
The Baghdad Battery was first described by German archaeologist Wilhelm Konig in 1938 after it was found, with several others, at Khujut Rabu, just outside Baghdad. The jars are thought to be about 2,000 years old and consist of an earthenware shell, with a stopper of asphalt. Sticking through the top of the stopper is an iron rod. Inside the jar the rod is surrounded by a cylinder of copper. Konig thought they looked like electric batteries and published a paper on the subject in 1940. Several years later, Willard Gray of the General Electric High Voltage Laboratory in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, made some reproductions. When filled with an electrolyte, like grape juice, the devices produced about two volts of electricity.

In 1953, Remington Records of the USA began taping some of its sessions in stereo, eventually releasing the first stereophonic phonograph discs to the public in 1958.

The Heavy ALBUM LAUNCH plus Cougar, Spokes, Counter Revue, DJ Food on 1 Oct 2009

Location: Hoxton Square Bar & Kitchen

ALBUM LAUNCH for the *amazing* The Heavy...

TICKETS: http://www.seetickets.com/thelocal/price.asp?code=403996&userid={C3B3F136-4AD2-4604-A0BB-C298F671FECF}&filler1=see&filler3=id1thelocal

http://www.myspace.com/theheavy73

The Heavy continually cross genres as they as a unit are proud to be completely musically schizophrenic. From country to rhythm and blues, garage punk to rock and roll, Studio one to the slums of shaolin, you'll find that The Heavy are indeed like a pack of chemists with the way that genres get cooked up, blended, stirred and then mixed, to create their own unique style of rock and roll.

The Heavy have been building. With a background in the joys of sampling and a foreground in scuzzy guitar, bass and beaten up drums, with schizo music tastes and a West Country pace, they’ve been building brick by dirty brick. Now they’d like to welcome you into their beautiful home for a little nose around, a kind of party if you like. And if a little blood gets spilled then that’s just how it is. Nobody said it was going to be a spread from “Hello” magazine. It will, though, be the best party you’ve ever been to.

The first single to be released from the new album "The House That Dirt Built" will be a garage punk/ soul offering with so much weight that the likes of Bunker Hill and Syl Johnson will wonder why the two genres never came together more often. "Oh no! Not you again!" is a testament to the evil and vices that we all surround ourselves with but don't necessarily want......or need.

The Heavy have toured the world and, where the first record was sample-based, the new one is much more a product of working as a band. Like the early rock ‘n’ roll, blues and rhythm and blues which have influenced it, “The House That Dirt Built” is larger than life, funny, terrifying and occasionally beautiful. It is, in fact, a house you’ll want to visit again.

The track, recorded in one take in a dirty little shack, in a crazy little town, in the west country features vocals from Shingai Shoniwa of The Noisettes and Jim Abbiss on mix and co production duty. You will not experience another song like this from any other band this year. So dirty. So much weight. So much energy and laced with a soul that you just don't hear anymore........
The Heavy have indeed created a monster

Spokes

http://www.myspace.com/spokessound

Spokes are originally from the rolling hills of North East England, which perhaps explains the rustic feel of their reverb-soaked, violin-coated sound. Their mini album "People Like People Like You" is already causing great excitement in the independent press receiving ‘album of the week’ status on Boomkat and glittering reviews on Don’t Panic and Angry Ape. Their ambitious live performances combine field recordings and accidental noise with a delicate but powerful 5 piece band. Spokes are currently working on their debut long player for Counter Records.

Press Release for "People Like People Like You"

“It’s incredibly easy to fall in love with an album when it takes in elements of slow-core, post-rock, shoe-gaze, folk and pop music so effortlessly… Absolutely gorgeous stuff and a real find…”
(‘Album of the week’, Boomkat.com)

“Given the right push Spokes have the potential to breach the mainstream, the potential is there for all to see on this record. Memories of your first experience of Broken Social Scene or even Arcade Fire are sure to come flooding back, as the five-piece tap into the celebratory nature of both revered Canadian acts. Spokes are definite ‘ones to watch’, long may it continue.”
(Angry Ape)

Cougar

http://www.myspace.com/cougarsound

Conceived in Madison, Wisconsin, Cougar’s instrumental arrangements fall somewhere between Four Tet, Fugazi, and Nick Drake’s guitar work, albeit optimistic as opposed to morose. The band’s singular sound is rooted in a keen sensibility of form and texture, more in line with sample-based music and modern classical than indie rock - which isn’t to say this is rock-as-academia – Cougar also invoke the roaring riff monster, the fist-in-the-air, anthemic head-banger to which so many groups give only an ironic nod.

Extensive touring supported the group’s debut album, Law (mixed with John McEntire of Tortoise), which made numerous Best of 2007 lists in the USA. Live dates in the States and abroad included stints with U.N.K.L.E., Maximo Park, Art Brut and more.

Cougar’s second album, the forthcoming Patriot (August 17th on Counter), is an aggressive, narrative affair that sees the band reach even greater extremes than on Law. The epic, sparkling counterpoint of the first record crops up, but Patriot firmly establishes itself as a different music shredding the lines between electronic, rock and modern, one that never forgets to pay allegiance to the hook. If an album of new music raises the question, “What kind of band IS this?” then perhaps the artist is doing their job. Urgent, captivating and strangely moving: emergency rock.

DJ Food & DK - "Solid Steel - Now, Listen Again"

"Want to hear Rakim dueting on the mic with Phil Oakey from the Human League? Rock drummer Cozy Powell trading beats with DJ Format? Maybe the funky film version of 'Are You Being Served' is more to your taste or some West Coast surf-psych in the form of The Dragons' rarity 'Food For My Soul'? Resisting all the food puns we can think of (we know you'll be doing it for us) Solid Steel presents DJ Food & DK with "Now, Listen Again" - the sequel to the mix that kicked off the series in 2001."

"Mixed to stupefying proficent standards, it will have your head in bits - in the best possible way."
5/5 Mixmag

"A mix that 99 percent of the planet will go crazy about."
Dazed and Confused

"Flat-out, mind-mangling fun."

Beyond the Loop on 10 Oct 2009

Location: Kings Place

This collaboration is unique and the concept simple but terrifying. Walk on stage and start composing (using Sibelius notation software) from scratch. No safety net. No pre-composed ideas or templates just a blank score. The orchestral musicians play from monitors linked to the composers' computers.

Jules Buckley, the Heritage Orchestra's conductor, working from the ever-developing on-screen scores, brings in the musicians as he sees fit. The Bays respond. The composers respond to The Bays and Orchestra. And so on. Suddenly you realise you are in the middle of a never to be repeated aural experience which could move in any direction at any time. Scary but unbelievably exhilarating for both audience and musicians.

Andrew Bird at Union Chapel, London on 10 Nov 2009

Location: Union Chapel

Andrew Bird’s new album Noble Beast released to rapturous applause from all quarters, debuting at a remarkable Number 12 in the US Billboard charts, and in the UK, was Rough Trade Shop’s ‘Album of the Month’. Following a sellout show at London‘s Shepherd’s Bush Empire, Bird will perform in the atmospheric surrounds of Islington’s Union Chapel.

Delivering mesmerizing live sets of utterly riveting songs that work their magic on their own believable terms, without a hint of cloying nostalgia or riff-fueled seduction, Bird plays strings, glockenspiel, wurlitzer and tape loops...

"Bird could be the only performer who's lit up both Lollapalooza and Bonnaroo with a combination of vocals, violin, guitar, glockenspiel and whistling... he uses centuries-old instrumentation to give depth and soul to folk rock."--ESQUIRE "The Masters Are Dead--Long Live The Masters," November 2008

“Andrew Bird is a true musical one-off. You really ought to see him.” 5/5 The Guardian

"Like Scott Walker assimilating Sufjan Stevens" 4/5 Uncut
