It worked well enough, but it was always a bit of a kludge - since the Last.fm client didn't support Applescript, it worked by manipulating the application menus.

The new beta desktop client has better support for Applescript, including verbs for play, pause, next, previous, love, and ban. Here's an updated version of the script that takes advantage of that:

# rate the track 5 stars in iTunes
tell application "iTunes"
set rating of current track to 100
end tell
# love the track in last.fm
tell application "Last.fm"
love
end tell
# I use Launchbar to run this script - this hides it when it's finished
# Leave this part out if you don't use Launchbar
tell application "Launchbar"
hide
end tell

Enjoy :)

PS: Dear Last.fm - it's 2012.

Yesterday I fed my monthly music addiction with a new round of stuff from eMusic. After I downloaded everything, I realized that everything I got this month came from musical families:

Sorrythankyou byUnbelievable Truth - this band is fronted by Andy Yorke, the younger brother of Radiohead's Thom Yorke. You can hear the family resemblence in the vocals, but the comparison stops there. This has a much more mainstream feel to it than anything I've ever heard from Radiohead. Whether that's good or bad is a matter of personal taste.. I think it's okay, but not spectacular.

Fables by Immaculate Machine - Immaculate Machine's lead singer Kathryn Calder is the niece of New Pornographers leader A.C. She also sings in New Pornographers, where she is knows as "not Neko Case, but the other one". (Seriously, it must suck to not be Neko Case.. I really don't like country music, alt or otherwise, but Neko weakens my resolve. What a voice!) So far, I'm indifferent to this album, but I think it will grow on me.

EP by The Fiery Furnaces - Still my current favorite band ever, The Fiery Furnaces are a brother-and-sister act. EP has less of a learning curve than their other albums, so if you're thinking about trying them out, this might be a good place to start. Of course, this means that the songs on this album lack the epic storylines prevalent in their other work, but it's still great stuff.

Sunny Border Blue by Kristin Hersh - Kristin Hersh comes from Throwing Muses, which she started way back in the 80s with her step-sister... yes, my family theme is getting pretty thin here.

(2012-12-26: There's a new version of this script for the new beta Last.fm desktop client. It's much better!)

I just wrote my first AppleScript ever :)

The problem: I found myself doing too much pointing, clicking, and thinking to do the following things:

Rate the currently-playing track in iTunes

Tell Last.fm that I "love" the track if I've rated it 4 or 5 stars

AppleScript to the rescue!

tell application "iTunes"
set rating of current track to 100
end tell
tell application "Last.fm" to activate
tell application "System Events"
    tell application process "Last.fm"
click menu item "Love" of menu "Tools" of menu bar 1
click menu item "Hide Last.fm" of menu "Last.fm" of menu bar 1
    end tell
end tell
open location "x-launchbar:hide"

The first bit is fairly simple... iTunes stores ratings as a number 0 to 100, so rating a track as 100 means 5 stars.

The next part is a bit tricky, because the Last.fm application doesn't listen to AppleScript commands directly. Instead, we have to tell the OS to click the menus and whatnot that Last.fm owns. You can find more info about scripting "unscriptable" applications here.

Finally, that last bit is in there to tuck away the LaunchBar app that I use to run the script.

LaunchBar kicks ass... it keeps track of all of your applications, documents, music, scripts, and a bunch of other stuff, and lets you get to just about anything with a couple of keystrokes. It looks things up by abbreviations.. so, I've saved that script as 'Rate 5 Stars', so I can run it by hitting command-Space (which brings up LaunchBar) then R-5 ("Rate 5").

That's MUCH faster tracking down windows and clicking menus and stars... so, yay me :)
