After a weekend of seeing Matt Nathanson at the Troubadour for the 1st time, then the next morning buying a ticket to see him again in Malibu (because I NEEDED more) I thought I had my fix... turns out I have become insatiable for this artist. The following Wednesday I hopped on the 405 fwy from the westside at 5:30pm* and made it barely in the nick of time to catch...Matt's in-store performance at Fingerprints in Long Beach. Afterwards there was a little 'meet n greet' WOO! What a great culmination of my initial 'touring' with this guy. This was my 1st time seeing him and chasing him around to as many shows as I can and DEFINATELY not the last. I've been matturbating ever since.

*which does show I love this guy becuz no one in their right mind would get on that fwy from westLA to LBC at that time if they didn't have to... seriously
_______________________________________________

He looked at me and said with a smile, "Hi"... one of my favorite words.

I felt as though someone hit me with a frying pan. Like right smack dab in the middle of my face. Not like on the top of my head but from straight on. Full frontal frying pan *boom*.

It all becomes a blur from that point on but what I recall...

I handed him my poster that without words was understood that I wanted him to sign it. At about the same time I told him how I only planned on going to the show at the Troubadour and ended up running to Malibu the next night and now I was here at this performance. To which he did a "wow, cool" kinda thing.

He asked my name, (for the autograph) and I'z like "Jenny" and he's all "is that with an IE?" and I said "no, with a Y". I watched him begin to scribble my name and then above it put "I <3" then carefully colored in the heart.... sigh. Of course he signed his name below that.... sigh.

At this point I was able to ask him my question. "So I'm curious, I'm a HUGE Liz Phair fan. When you mention Angel sounds like a Liz Phair song, is it Perfect World off of Whitechocolatespaceegg?" He looked up at me, smiled, and said 'Yep, that's such a great song' THEN... sang just a little bit of it to me....... *passes out*

It was then that I got a hug from Matt Nathanson. Awh... I just said at that point that I loved his work and cannot wait to see him on the road again. and He was like 'aw thanks'. A second parting hug came outta this exchange at some point. It was about this time when I just felt like some blundering, giggly, blushing school girl. At that last lil hug I just said "God you're awesome, keep up the rock." I just blurted it out, that's all I could muster.... and walked away.

The drive home my hands were 10 and 2 on the steering wheel, no radio, my mouth gaping open and just frozen the entire hour plus drive.

Oh Matty, what a pretty life you have.

_______________________________________________

"Perfect World" by Liz Phair
_______________________________________________

What a pretty life you have
Oh boy, it's a pretty life you have
And I would need a map
Just so I could navigate the back yard

Home is very ordinary
I know I was born to lead a double life
A murderous strife and misery
And when I find it, I know I'll make sense of me

I want to be cool, tall, vulnerable and luscious
I would have it all if I'd only had this much
No need for Lucifer to fall if he'd learn to keep his mouth shut
I would be be involved
Be involved
Be involved
Be involved
I would be involved with you

I know the girls
That live inside your world
Just sitting next to a mortal makes their skin crawl

I want to be cool, tall, vulnerable and luscious
I would have it all if I'd only had this much
No need for Lucifer to fall if he'd learn to keep his mouth shut
I would be involved with you

I want to be cool, tall, vulnerable and luscious
I would have it all if I'd only had this much
No need for Lucifer to fall if he'd learn to keep his mouth shut
Be involved
Be involved
Be involved
Be involved
I would be involved with you
Oh, with you

She was spectacular!

The mega-historic Orpheum Theater was a wonderful place to showcase Polly Jean and her new material off her latest album, White Chalk.

There was no merch, no opener, not even a band to back her up... just a historic theater in the burgeoning downtown area of Los Angeles and Miss Harvey with her instruments and that angelic voice.

She came out on the stage to a seated audience that immediately rose to their feet. She opened with 'To Bring You My Love' and the audience all sat back down and roared after every song. At one point audience members had a shouting match as to who loved PJ more. PJ pointed to someone near the front and said 'I think she loves me the most.' I wonder if that was some super fan or something. One person shouted, 'I love your dress!' (it's this beautiful victorian looking gown she had made special for this album I think) Another shouted 'What's on it?' (there's scribbles and writing on it) To which she replied, 'it's the lyrics to my songs, look, The Devil is right there on my arm, it's quite handy actually.' She pointed out the chandeliers up on the mezzanine for one song and how beautiful they were. Clearly she was as wow'd by the theater as all of us were.

The setlist was identical to the one my boyfriend found out there on the internets. I was wondering what the song 'Nina' was on it. Turns out its a song she wrote some time ago that never ended up on an album. She loves the song and wanted to incorporate it into the set. It was slow and dreamy sounding. All the songs were pretty much performed in versions that were more acoustic and solo. The show had a very solitary vibe. Even old fave 'Down By the Water' was done in a very different way that made such a well travelled song sound new again. If I had to pick a favorite performance of the night it'd be 'My Beautiful Leah' which was belted out with exuberance and I love the lonely cymbol that she crashes in that song. Another highlight was 'Rid of Me' oh and 'Snake'. I basically had a huge smile on my face the entire show. I think I sang 'Rid of Me' in the car the whole way home. Heheh.

The main thing I took away from this night was the amount of love and adoration PJ Harvey's fans have for her. I don't think I've ever seen anything that could compare. The environment and tone of the evening was so special and unique. Let's pray there's a full on tour in the works. God I just love this woman.

PJ Harvey

Check out my blurry cell phone pics!

Last.fm Web Page for the Event

Yeah, and I was there. Here I sit on a Sunday night when I should be sound asleep preppin for the big work week to hit me like a ton o bricks and all I can think about is the magnificent time I had in the most beautiful pacific northwest with Paul, The Beastie Boys and a bunch of great friends whom I cherish like oxygen.

I flew directly to Paul's arms in Vancouver the night before, we chilled for the night and then the next day it was road trippin to Seattle.

We went directly to the SeaTac airport to pick up homeboy, Rusty, aka Pootytang. Both Paul and I were soooo excited to see him that uhm, uh, I'll just keep that between Paul and I ;). LOL *sigh* No really, we jumped outta the truck and I just ran up and gave that big teddy bear a big hug and we were off for the Beastie Boys show.

This show IMO was to be the BEST of the 3 shows that weekend. The only thing lackin was Yauchers... :( I dunno what happened to him that day, but it seemed to be an off day at the office for him. I mean, we've all had 'em so yeah, but aw shucks. Too bad my man Yauch-a-roonie was slow and low. Anyhow, I had 3 bboy shows in 3 days. Yeah, talk about feeling like a make-a-wish kid.

Upon pulling up to the venue, who do I spy before anything else but Cindy lining up before anyone else. Gotta love that undying dedication. I dropped the boys off at the curb, (apparently right in front of the bboys unbeknownst to me, derrrrr) and then I ran off to Cindy's hotel to change into some Gala gear in a public bathroom. I walk a few blocks to the venue only to discover I just missed *sigh* yeah Adam. *sigh* yeah Adam and $mark had come out front of the venue for a smoke and chatted it up with my homies and I missed the whole dang thing. :( Ah well, prolly better that way, when faced with the prospect of talking to Horovitz, in my mind I picture running at the speed of light in the opposite direction of his greatness and throwing up. Yeah I'm pathetic like that. I was so happy for my friends who got that experience though. I knew tonight was gonna be gooooooood.

While standing in line we got to hear the sound check. I believe it was "Egg Raid on Mojo" that busted out of the club and I felt a rush of excitement. I honestly love most the Beastie Boys hardcore work. Mike on the Mic is woo man... good stuff. Knowing that was in store for the evening just got my pulse rushing.

Talking to the doorman I found out a fact that I thought was pretty cool. He's all "Yeah apparently the Beastie Boys moved in backstage. They've got computer stations set up as well as an ironing board and stuff." Hahaha, yep, gotta keep them suits wrinkle free!

I seem to be the only one of my group recalling this and maybe I'm on crack... but I swear this evenings jams contained extended endings, like the boys were just jammin at the end of the usual songs and I was so into it. I wish there was some way of confirming or denying this for me. Am I onto something here or am I just nuts? I can't figure this out.

Thee treat of the evening for me was hearing "Transitions" played live. (see my top trax, it's up thurr as well as it's mentioned in my musical me survey thingy) It's kind of a sleeper cut, but has long been a staple of my musical diet. I'll forever be greatful for them playing that this fine evening. The crowd kinda died down a lil bit, cuz how do you really jam out to this song you just chill to it. I was in complete heaven.

Another treat was "Mark on the Bus". When I saw $mark head for the guitar station and Horoveezie go to the keyboards, I'z like uh oh whattatheydoin? The performance of it was spot on! I swear, there are 4 bboys, Mark IS a Beastie Boy as far as I'm concerned.

And HONKEY RINK? How random is that? Live at PJ's? Egg Raid? Tough Guy? Time for Livin'? Remote Control? What? OMG, the setlist was a "Jenny's died and gone to heaven" setlist. LOL Honkey Rink was dedicated to or a song for the people or royalty of Dubai? I'm still scratchin my head over that one.

This reminds me of all the banter. Another reason the Beastie Boys are ugh, perfect. Horovitz was in RARE form. He had this glow emerging from him like he's on top of the world. It just made the night extra special. Few people in this world have that inexplicable "IT" quality and usually they're celebs because of said "IT". Yeah, that little shit's got "IT". Wow, and luckily my barricade spot for the night was what me and my crew refer to "The H Spot". YAY! Hbomb was shreddin on his guitar, smiling throughout, making witty comments, ugh, did I mention just plain perfect? At one point he was told by an audience member that he was a pimp. To which he replied, "No sir, I am not a pimp. I am a musician by profession. If you meant that as a compliment, thank you." Horoblitz has more grace wit style and sass in his pinky finger than most of us do in our entire bodies. At one point he asked for requests to which I grew some balls and shouted, "SLOPPY DRUNKS"! He heard me *gasp* *faint* and said "uh oh looks like we've got a Country Mike fan in the house" then Mike's all "Nobody likes a Sloppy Drunk." (ain't that the truth) But no really, was a special moment for me. Another fun moment was towards the end of the show when Mike started lippin off to Adam. I totally shouted out "FIGHT, FIGHT!" They had to have heard me, I'm only a few feet away. I just know how Adam's always like "omg MIKE I'm so gonna FIGHT you" in interviews and stuff and I'z dyin to see it right before mine own eyes. It was fun, and MoMark jumps out with a roll of tape and draws a line for them to not cross so the show can continue. Ah, good times, good times. :D

Afterwards Mark came up to the barricade and handed everyone a setlist in my party, but lil ol me. I've never gotten a setlist and just thought to myself, "damn I'm destined to never get a Beastie Boys setlist." Paul saw the distraught look on my face and jumped to action. He got Horovitz' setlist! *squeal* So I got it in my hands and proceeded to plant a smooch on Pauly for such a wonderful deed. At that very moment, Adam's guitar tech (I think his name's Timmy like the retarded kid on south park) RIPPED the setlist outta my mitts. Like raped me of my Adam Horovitz setlist. :( Then the weirdest part is he placed a different setlist in my hands. It was awkward, weird, strange and just an all out bummer. I mean, I still have a setlist, but just I'm majorly scratchin my noggin' over that one.

It was definately without a doubt in my mind the best of the 3 shows. Did I mention I got to see 3 Bboy shows in 3 days? Fuckin A I can't believe it. It was the best to me for these reasons... it was the cherry poppin gala experience for one. We were the first to experience TMU era. This show had the most banter of the 3 shows complete with Ricky Powell stories! Giving Adam's luggage away in Europe somewhere, dropping a Baby Ruth bar in a pool somewhere in Japan... but most importantly, I crave that type of intimacy with the Beastie Boys, it was splendiferously stupendous.

Beastie Boys

Beastie Boys at The Crocodile Cafe' in Seattle
