After a wild, wild ride of gigs and concerts, I've finally found some time to squeeze in a Hypelist!

*Peaches - Talk To Me
I'm not too sure what I think about the album as a whole, but I'm LOVING this song! As if we need any more proof that Soulwax, who lend a hand with this song, is awesome.

*Frightened Rabbit - The Modern Leper
Gorgeous! Sounds a bit like... Well. Undeniably British anyway. Just trust me on this.
Yes, you do know that voice: that's Snow Patrol's Gary Lightbody! This is his "supergroup" with people from all over Schotland. Arab Strap, Belle and Sebastian, Idlewild, Mogwai. Mull Historical Society...

Oh boy, do I have some great stuff for you this week!

*The Decemberists - The Rake's Song
I don't even know where to start on this one. This is my current favourite track off the new album, The Hazards of Love. It's a concept album that tells a sort of folklore tale, a rock opera if you will, so the songs have to be seen in the total context of the story. Opinions are greatly divided on this project, some people compare it to David Bowie's The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust, some people think it's just pretentious. This album definitely requires multiple listens to sink in, but so far, I'm leaning towards 'awesome'. What can I say? I love stories.

*Beirut - Postcards From Italy
Balkan gypsy music is on the rise, and this is another example of how awesome that wave can be. Love it, love it, LOVE IT.

*Eef Barzelay - N.M.A.
I'll just quote the little blurb on his page: "Eef Barzelay is the S.S.W.G (singer/songer/with/guitar) for the band Clem Snide. He enjoys old-timey music but also has an out-of-left-field interest in the apocalyptic and the ways human folly and failure might influence it. Wake up! Goodnight."

*Explosions in the Sky - Day Eight
An entirely instrumental band, who create epic, ambient 'soundscapes'. I didn't know which song to pick, because they're all amazing, so I went with this one, because it reminded me of Snow Patrol's The Golden Floor, but you honestly need to listen to these tracks in their entirety to properly appreciate them.

*The Faint - I Disappear
Electronic, funky, dark. Booya.

I skipped a week, but now I finally found some time to type another hypelist.

*Bishop Allen - Click Click Click Click
So cute! Just too bad that you can't listen to any of their stuff on Last.FM.

*Mystery Jets - <a title="Mystery Jets – Young Love (feat. Another artist with very little stuff to listen to on this site, but I highly recommend them anyway. Cheerful and versatile!

*Johnny Cash - The Mercy Seat
Damn, this song is intense. It's about a man who's about to be executed on the electric chair, and it's quite disturbing. And stunning. The original is by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, although I must say I prefer the acoustic version.

KT Tunstall's previous project. It's influenced by Balkan tunes and her voice fits perfectly.

*I Am Kloot - Strange Without You
One of my favourite songs by this band.

This has been an insanely busy week, so I haven't had much time to listen to music, but I've still got some tips for you!

*Solo - Alleen
This is his contribution to the Poetracks album. The basic idea is that musicians are given a poem by the three most famous Dutch writers (Mulisch, Reve, Hermans) and write a song, using the poem as lyrics. Solo used the poem 'Alleen' by Gerard Reve, and it's gorgeous! I can upload it, in case anyone's interested.

*DeVotchKa - How It Ends
I finally finished the book Everything Is Illuminated by Jonathan Safran Foer. I vaguely remember seeing the movie adaptation ages ago, and this is the song they put under the trailer. Gorgeous!

*Doves - The Man Who Told Everything
Another case of a Last.FM recommendation that I've finally listened to. And once again, I wasn't disappointed!

*The Rifles - The Great Escape
Great album, great band! They remind a lot of The Clash for some reason. And they're coming to Pinkpop! But why on earth isn't the new album up on Last.FM yet?

*Devandra Banhart - Lover
And another track that you can't listen to! Sigh. Well, it's cheerful and addictive, so, you know, there you have it.

Songs in which the artists sing bits in another language than English! Now, my first language is Dutch, so if I misspell anything, just let me know.

*Franz Ferdinand - Darts of Pleasure
"Ich heiße Superphantastisch! Ich trinke Schampus mit Lachsfisch! Ich heiße Su-per-phan-tas-tiiiisch!" Completely out of the blue, at the very end of the song, there it is! Band member Nick has German roots, which pops up its head ever once in a while, like with the song title Auf Achse.
"Ich mach dich gesund, sagte der Bär." This is a quote from the children's book "Oh, wie schön ist Panama!" by the German writer Janosch, who is mentioned in the song. "Panama" is also the name of the album on which this song can be found. Oh, clever, clever band.

*Damien Rice - The Professor * La Fille Danse
"La fille danse
Quand elle joue avec moi
Et je pense que je l'aime des fois
Le silence, n'ose pas dis-donc
Quand on est ensemble
Mettre les mots
Sur la petite dodo"

One little verse at the very end of this B-side. Gorgeous.

*Regina Spektor - Après Moi
Not only does she quote Louis XV ("Après moi la déluge!"), but she actually sings a stanza from a Russian poem by Boris Pasternak (from Dr Zhivago fame, oh yes!):

Fevrale dostat chernil i plakat
Pisat O Fevrale navsnryd
Poka grohochushaya slyakot
Vesnoyu charnoyu gorit

Which I believe can be translated as:

February, get ink, shed tears.
Write of it, sob your heart out, sing,
While torrential slush that roars,
Burns in the blackness of the spring.

Awesome. And speaking of Regina Spektor:

*Regina Spektor - Lacrimosa
"Lacrimosa dies ilia
Qua resurget ex favilla
Judicandus homo reus.
Huic ergo parce, Deus,
Pie Jesu Domine,
Dona eis requiem"

Yeah, you read right: that's f*cking Latin. How cool is that?

What I've been listening to this week:

*Bishop Allen - Middle Management I watched Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist this week (Michael Cera = love). Average movie, nothing too special, but the soundtrack's pretty nice.

*We Are Scientists - After Hours Also from the Nick & Norah soundtrack, and one of my favourite We Are Scientists songs. Amazing!

*The Rascals - Out of Dreams Okay, they may sound a lot like the Arctic Monkeys, but I really think this band has its own merit. Not brilliant, but nice nonetheless. I particularly like the Editorsesque guitar riffing at the end.

*The Bravery - This Is Not The End Addictive and fun, what more could you wish for? Possibly my favourite song off their latest album, closely followed by Believe.

*Delays - Touch Down I'd almost forgotten about this band until I was listening to My Recommendations the other day, and I sort of rediscovered the reason I liked them in the first place.

Since I started studying literature this year, I thought I'd make it this week's theme: Books! And it's extra long because I couldn't choose just five songs. :)
I don't know if it's the way he sings it or just the (gorgeous) accent. Maybe both.
