KRAFTWERK 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 on 24 May 2013

Location: Opera House

Following rave reviews from the press and near hysteria at the box office, the eight concert phenomenon that has taken New York (MoMA), Düsseldorf (Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen) and London (TATE Modern) by storm now takes up residence at Sydney Opera House for Vivid LIVE 2013. KRAFTWERK – THE CATALOGUE 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 is a live 3D journey through eight albums that changed the face of popular music forever.

A concept eight years in-the-making since their initial invitation from the Venice Biennale, Kraftwerk have collected three decades of their most innovative music into an audiovisual exhibition that has redefined traditional concert motifs. Celebrating eight studio masterworks across four evenings – Autobahn (1974), Radio-Activity (1975), Trans Europe Express (1977), The Man Machine (1978), Computer World (1981), Techno Pop (1986), The Mix (1991) and Tour de France (2003) – this groundbreaking new performance series explores each album chronologically alongside their most iconic moments and artwork, creating the definitive Kraftwerk retrospective.

THE CATALOGUE 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 (3D Shows) - AUTOBAHN (1974) - on 24 May 2013

Location: Opera House

24 May, 7pm - AUTOBAHN (1974)
The perfect soundtrack for the ultimate roadmovie and the beginning of electropop. This pioneering album is a picturesque journey through musical landscapes and sound paintings. The synthetik symphony features a mesmerising motorik rhythm around a collage of car horns, engine noise, radio static and floating melodies. Kraftwerk’s modern pop legacy starts here and Autobahn, in its edited form becomes a revolutionary hit single around the world. Kraftwerk compose cinema for the ears.

Location: Opera House

24 May, 9.30pm - RADIO-ACTIVITY (1975)
A highly innovative science fiction movie soundtrack about radio-activity and the activity of the radio. This all-electronic concept album explores the themes of broadcast communications and nuclear radiation. Surfing on sine waves and scanning the stratosphere for stray radio signals, Kraftwerk plug themselves into a buzzing grid of energy and radio signals. Radio-activity marks the move to more pop-structured songs.

Kraftwerk - THE CATALOGUE 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 (3D Shows) - TRANS EUROPE EXPRESS (1977) on 25 May 2013

Location: Opera House

25 May, 7pm - TRANS EUROPE EXPRESS (1977)
Kraftwerk celebrate Europe's romantic past and shimmering future with a glistening panorama of travel and technology, elegance and decadence. The streamlined locomotive sequencer rhythms of ‘Trans Europe Express’ with its pneumatic, piston-pumping beats of ' Metal On Metal ' are in contrast to the beautiful melody. New York DJ Afrika Bambaataa would re-construct this song five years later for his own seminal ‘Planet Rock’. This Kraftwerk album is a milestone in avant-pop modernism and later becomes a crucial influence on the early pioneers of hip-hop and sampling, electro and industrial music.

Location: Opera House

25 May, 9.30pm - THE MAN MACHINE (1978)
Over processed robotik rhythms which predate the rise of European techno and trance, Kraftwerk address automation and alienation, space travel and engineering, the seductive allure of urban landscapes and the vacant glamour of celebrity. ‘The Robots’ adds another dimension to Kraftwerk's ultra-dry sense of humour and behind its intoxicating melodic pulse, ‘The Model’ is a highly prophetic satire on the beauty industry. ‘Neon Lights’ is Kraftwerk's most achingly romantic song to date, a sci-fi lullaby for cities at twilight.

Location: Opera House

26 May, 7pm - COMPUTER WORLD (1981)
Kraftwerk beam themselves into the future by writing about home computers, online dating and globalised electronic surveillance years before these phenomena truly come into being. A vision of bright hopes and dark fears of the booming microchip revolution, ‘Computer World’ is a serenely beautiful and almost seamless collage of sensual melodies and liquid beatscapes. Tracks like ‘Numbers’ and ‘Pocket Calculator, with their weightless bleeps and elastic beats, and their cyberfunk, predict the silky rhythms of Chicago house and inspire a generation of Detroit techno artists.

From the block-rocking beats and synthetik language of ‘Boing Boom Tschack’ to the processed vocal chants of MTV-age anthem ‘Musique Non Stop, Kraftwerk's first excursion into digital recording finds both beauty and unease in a world of permanent media overload. Kraftwerk confirm clubland credentials with their Kling Klang Studio live mixing techniques and a return to live concert activities. They rework 11 of their best-loved tunes for a new generation. Original sounds are reconstructed from their archives and sound library at Kling Klang and sequenced for these new versions that now feature more machine -like rhythms and cleaned-up, liquid-crystal sounds. ‘The Mix’ is a career-spanning collection of legendary electro anthems and a strong statement of the two-way traffic between Kraftwerk and electro club culture.

Karl Hyde at Opera House, Sydney on 27 May 2013

Location: Opera House

Renowned as one of the most influential electronic artists of all time as frontman for Underworld, singer-producer Karl Hyde makes his solo debut in an exclusive Vivid LIVE presentation of new album Edgeland; performed in full alongside a selection of Underworld rarities and classics.
Now exploring the darkest edges of Underworld’s trademark sound in a spectacular new setting, Hyde has crafted a graceful, meditative song cycle described by Academy-Award winner Anthony Minghella as ‘esoteric Underworld’. A year-in-the-making with pioneering producer / guitarist Leo Abrahams (Brian Eno, Imogen Heap, Florence + the Machine), Edgeland sees Hyde strip away the effects in a masterful display of poetic lyricism and cinematic soundscapes – making this Vivid LIVE debut a pivotal moment in one of electronic music’s great legacies.

27 May, 9.30pm - TOUR DE FRANCE (2003)
The year 2003 marked the centenary of the Tour de France and the conceptual starting line for Kraftwerk's global touring activities....Minimum-Maximum. The album features an immaculate new version of their legendary 20-year-old former single, the exquisitely graceful ‘Tour de France’ and the album is a film script that takes the listener through the hills and valleys of the cycling circuit.
Cloud Control at Opera House, Sydney on 31 May 2013

Location: Opera House

Culminating in a weekend finale that celebrates Australia's diverse musical landscape, Vivid LIVE welcomes back Blue Mountains heroes Cloud Control in a sneak preview of their highly anticipated new album - marking their first headline shows since relocating abroad with the Australian Music Prize-winning Bliss Release.

Proving irresistible ambassadors of swoon-worthy harmonies with pulsing rhythms, Cloud Control have triumphantly evolved from their uni-comp origins into consummate performers of sun-drenched pop – led by a classic boy-girl partnership found in co-vocalists Alister Wright and Heidi Lenffer. Anchored by a rhythm section comprised of younger sibling Ulrich Lenffer (drums) and childhood friend Jeremy Kelshaw (bass), the quartet has captured the nation's spirit with their refreshing sound and unbridled enthusiasm for the live stage. Now preparing for the imminent release of their sophomore album, Vivid LIVE invites Cloud Control to mark the beginning of an exciting new phase that is set to win over the world.

Matthew E. White at Opera House, Sydney on 2 Jun 2013

Location: Opera House

In one of the most startling success stories of the past year, 30-year old Virginia native Matthew E. White baffled the music industry by starting his own record label, forming a groove-heavy house band in the Stax/Motown tradition, and as an afterthought... made his singing debut with the instant-classic Big Inner – a time-warped meditation of country, r 'n' b, funk and folk born from his attic-studio origins.

An arranger for the likes of The Mountain Goats and big band jazz collective Fight the Big Bull, White has assembled a live incarnation of Big Inner equally adept at grand orchestration as the gritty intimacy of a '70s soul revue. Making his Australian debut whilst on the cusp of wider public consciousness, White will mark this watershed moment with a performance that brings audiences into a community bound by southern musical traditions.

Presented in association with Handsome Tours.

Martha Wainwright at Opera House, Sydney on 6 Jun 2013

Location: Opera House

Fresh from glowing performances in Europe and North America, Martha Wainwright returns to perform a career-spanning set, including songs from her first original release in 4-years, 2012's acclaimed Come Home to Mama.

With a constantly changing timbre of depth, Martha Wainwright displays a remarkable polarity between songs of harrowing despair that also show a sense of spontaneity and playfulness. It is this striking mixture of light and shade and her ability to conceptualize, tackle and achieve dynamic arrangements that marry so beautifully with her heartfelt lyrics of remarkable candour and acrimonious humour.

As Spin Magazine documented about her live performances: "…her stage presence suggests several things at one time - defiant and strong, yet with an edge of sadness and vulnerability as well."

She can, within a single verse, play both angel and demon. Martha's incredible, evocative and characterful voice will course its way through pop, soul, folk and torch, and will introduce new songs from her latest release Come Home to Mama.
